Compressed Argon Gas

SYOXSA, Inc. originates and ships PurityPlus® Argon for use by a number of different El Paso businesses.

Certain traits eventually led Argon to become an excellent candidate for technical uses, such as providing a heavier atmosphere in which to isolate neutrons in nuclear research, during the final years of the nineteenth century:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its perceived abundance when compared to other scarce gases, and
  • its commercial workability.

By far, the most common early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs at the start of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial development of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s had to have a dense inert gas, normally Argon-based. While it’s true that none of these are genuine specialty-gas purity applications, their popularity shows no sign of disappearing and they still represent a large portion of Argon’s sales volume.

Present-day specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in diverse analytical instrument applications, for example: in the identification and assessment of trace and ultra-trace elements employing Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon additionally finds application in many aspects of Gas Chromatography, especially those involving a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It’s frequently used also as a carrier gas to analyze hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. As things have progressed, Argon has been used most often by the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
